History of Cross Plains - Neophogen College |
The following is excerpted from Goodspeed's History of Robertson County, TN, originally published in 1886. You can find the entire text online here. An original marker from the Neophogen College is on display at the Cross Plains Municipal building. In 1873 Neophogen College, at Cross Plains, was founded by Prof. J. M. Walton, who had previously taught a very successful school at that place. He erected a large frame building, which was soon after destroyed by fire, but was immediately rebuilt of brick by a stock company. The college was at one time one of the leading institutions of the kind in the State, and at the first session 250 students were enrolled, 150 of whom were from other counties and States. Owing to dissension among the trustees in regard to its management the college lost favor with its patrons and was discontinued, although a school enrolling 100 pupils is still taught by Prof. Walton. |
